SURINAME’S FOREIGN MINISTER TELLS OAS OF POVERTY-FIGHTING MEASURES

  November 20, 2002

Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria E. Levens, told diplomats at the Organization of American States today that her government has spared no effort in its drive to tackle poverty, and has introduced rigorous measures to improve the situation of its neediest citizens.

“President Venetiaan made very clear that his administration is determined to bring Suriname and its people back on the path of prosperity, growth and development,” Minister Levens declared to a special session of the Permanent Council, reiterating the President’s pledge at the start of his administration just over two years ago.

Surveying the hemispheric situation, she urged the OAS to ensure that eradication of extreme poverty remain at the top of its agenda, given that more than 170 million citizens of the Americas still live in poverty.

She commended the Permanent Council on plans to host next Monday’s special session on “Women’s Participation in Political Processes” but expressed disappointment that, as 40 per cent of the work force, women “still face barriers when they try to reach the top.”

The Foreign Minister thanked the OAS for its collaboration with the Republic, which marks its 25th independence anniversary on November 25, also its 25th anniversary as an OAS member country, noting the success of the Suriname-OAS experience has been a matter of record.

And, speaking for her President, Minister Levens commended the OAS for its efforts to be more efficient, effective and streamlined, “ready to deal with the mandates of the Summit of the Americas process.” She observed that the OAS would be judged largely by the outcome of its reforms.

As Chairman, Ambassador Denis G. Antoine of Grenada opened the meeting and welcomed Surinamese Minister to the Permanent Council, her first time addressing the forum of member state Permanent Representatives.
