Afro-descendents

The Department of International Law (DIL) has been invited to take part in the ninth session of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, April 12-16, 2010. The Group of Experts was created by the Commission on Human Rights in 2002 and its mandate was extended in 2008 by the Human Rights Council. The group’s mandate is to study problems of racial discrimination that affect persons of African descent and related issues.

At the ninth session, the Working Group will analyze problems related to structural discrimination, and will constitute a forum to receive contributions for the International Year for People of African Descent (2011), which was adopted by a resolution of the UN General Assembly.

In the OAS framework, the Department of International Law provides legal advisory services to the Working Group to Prepare a Draft Inter-American Convention against Racism and All forms of Discrimination and Intolerance. The DIL is also implementing a Project for the Incorporation of the Afro-Descendent Theme in the Policies and Programs of the OAS.

At the ninth session of the UN Working Group of Experts the Department of International Law will make a presentation on possible proposals to be considered for the International Year for People of African Descent (2011).
