Upcoming Events

The Department of International Law, in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross, is organizing a special session of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs to discuss the promotion and respect for international humanitarian law. The meeting will take place on 29 January 2010 in the Simón Bolivar Room, in compliance with the mandate of the General Assembly on “Promotion of and Protection for International Humanitarian Law,” contained in resolution AG/RES. 2507 (XXXIX-O/09).

Speaking at the event will be Patricia Danzi, ICRC Chief of Operations for Latin America and the Caribbean; Patrick Zahnd, ICRC Legal Adviser for Latin America and the Caribbean; Jorge Palaciós Treviño, Rapporteur on the topic for the Inter-American Juridical Committee; Víctor Cubas Villanueva, Prosecutor of the Public Ministry of the District Attorney’s Office, Peru; Olivier Dubois, ICRC Deputy Head, Protection Division; and Cristina Pellandini, ICRC Adviser, Multilateral Diplomacy. The event will serve as a forum where the Permanent Missions, their political bodies, and the General Secretariat can engage in a political dialogue on issues of importance in international humanitarian law, with a view to obtaining valuable inputs for the preparation and negotiation of General Assembly resolutions regarding the promotion and protection of international humanitarian law in the Americas. .
