Seminar (1999)

Description of the Seminar

Pursuant to a mandate given to the Permanent Council at the recent General Assembly as set out in Resolution 1619 (AG/RES. 1619 (XXIX-O/99), this seminar was held at OAS headquarters on Monday, October 25, 1999. The purposes of this seminar were to commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Convention and to examine the state of humanitarian law in the Americas. The seminar brought together experts in the various aspects of humanitarian law for in-depth discussion of the issue. Special attention was given to recent developments concerning the creation of an International Criminal Court. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Cesar Gaviria, participated in the Seminar by conducting the Opening Remarks.  The Vice-President of the International Committe of the Red Cross, Dr. Jaques Forster, also participated in the Seminar.
