Training Local Stakeholders in Reforestation and the Management of Land for Neotropical Migrants in Colombia, Nicaragua, Peru
Coordinated by American Bird Conservancy (ABC)
Project Summary: The goals of this project are to engage local coffee growers and cattle ranchers in the region in improving the productivity of their lands for birds. The American Bird Conservancy (ABC) worked with Reserva Jaguar staff in Nicaragua, with Proaves Foundation in Colombia and with ECOAN in Peru to organize workshops with the coffee growers and cattle ranchers in order to promote in each of the regions, bird-friendly agro forestry systems such as silvipasture and shade-coffee The farmers were also encouraged to adopt those systems. Technical assistance, plant material and labor were offered as incentives. In addition, through these workshops the landowners were encouraged to protect remaining areas of natural forest on their lands in order to use them for bird habitat. Protected areas of natural habitat on coffee farms are often a requirement of certification programs, such as Rainforest Alliance sustainable agriculture certification. Technical assistance, plant material, and labor will be offered as incentives. Workshops Countries, Dates and Locations:
