SIDS Sustainable Energy Event at CSD-14 Highlights
Development and Use of Renewables
The 14th session of the UN
Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-14) held in
New York (from 01-12 May 2006) was devoted mostly to the
theme of sustainable energy. Within this framework, one
day was designated to address the energy challenges
faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The SIDS
Day provided the opportunity to monitor the progress of
implementation of the actions, policies and measures
related to energy resources in the Barbados Programme of
Action for the Sustainable Development of SIDS and the
Mauritius Strategy. The DSD organized and participated
in several events along these themes, together with
representatives of OAS member States. A highlight among
these events was a side event dedicated to the Global
Sustainable Energy Island Initiative (GSEII), a
partnership led by the DSD, with the Climate Institute
and the Energy and Security Group. During this side
event, the Ambassadors of Dominica and St. Kitts and
Nevis to the OAS, spoke of the on-going efforts to
catalyze the development and use of renewables and
energy efficiency through policy and regulatory reforms.
