SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR TRAVELS TO PANAMA

The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Organization of American States (OAS), Dr. Santiago A. Canton, will visit Panama next July 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, at the invitation of the Panamanian Government. During his visit, the Special Rapporteur will meet with the authorities of the Government of Panama, directors of the media, journalists and civil society organizations, to gather information on the situation of freedom of expression in Panama.

The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression is part of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and was created by the Commission with full support of the II Summit of Heads of States and Governments, that was held in Santiago, Chile, in April 1998. Its functions are to protect and promote full respect for freedom of expression in the Hemisphere, which is considered one of the fundamental pillars of democracy.
