Some one hundred people met today at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC, to express their support for the March for Peace with Social Justice, Democracy and the Defense of the Public in Colombia, which aims to support the efforts of the government and people for the pacification of the South American country.

After a minute of silence to honor the victims of violence in Colombia, the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, read a message from the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza in support of the peace process in Colombia. In addition, the representatives of Colombia to the OAS and the United States, Ambassadors Andrés González and Carlos Urrutia, took the floor to express the desire of Colombian society to live in peace and without violence.

Also present at the meeting were Arturo Villarino, Chair of the OAS Permanent Council and Ambassador of Panama to the organization; Hugo de Zela, Chief of Staff of Secretary General Insulza; ambassadors and representatives of several OAS Member States, and several dozen young people, largely from Colombia.

Following the meeting, the participants laid carnations and white roses in front of the bust of former Colombian President Alberto Lleras Camargo, who had a leading role in the founding of the OAS and was its first Secretary General.
