The Prime Minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe, today stressed the importance of improving investment and trade relations between the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa to strengthen "South-South" trade, during a keynote address delivered at the Americas-Africa Business Forum held today at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.

“Haiti is the African presence in the Caribbean," said Prime Minister Lamothe to the diplomats, government officials and entrepreneurs from the Americas and Africa who took part in the event. The Haitian politician recalled the cooperation agreements reached in various fields between his country and the Ivory Coast, adding that the goal is to expand this type of agreement to other African countries. In this regard, he said that Haiti participates as an observer in the African Union, adding that the goal is to participate as a partner.

Prime Minister Lamothe, who was introduced to the audience by the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, said his country should take advantage of its proximity to the United States and the trade agreement it has with the North American country to strengthen its relations with other nations.

The Americas Africa Business Forum is co-organized by the OAS and the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza; Ambassador Ramdin; and the Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Sindoso Ngwenya all took part in the opening of the event.
