OAS Secretary General Meets with President of El Salvador

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today in Washington, DC with the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, with whom he discussed the political situation in the hemisphere and the policies that governments in the region are implementing to ensure the safety of their citizens.

During the meeting, President Funes and the OAS leader discussed the peace process that is taking place in El Salvador with the support of the hemispheric institution. President Funes expressed his appreciation to Secretary General Insulza for the role of the OAS in a process in which a truce between gangs has been reached, which has led to a significant reduction in the number of homicides.

Secretary General Insulza and President Funes also discussed the meetings the President of El Salvador will hold in Washington with the authorities of the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank, in order to build support for the development of social policies in the Central American country.

President Funes was accompanied in the meeting by Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez; the Minister of Justice and Public Security, David Munguía; and the ambassadors of El Salvador to the OAS and the White House, Joaquín Maza and Ruben Zamora, respectively. Secretary General Insulza was accompanied by the Director of the Department of Public Security, Paulina Duarte, and the advisor to the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security, Alvaro Briones.
