The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Chair of the Governing Board of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Göran Lennmarker, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

The Secretary General of the OAS and the Chair of the Governing Board of SIPRI discussed the situation in the region in terms of defense, security, organized crime, prison conditions and drugs. Secretary General Insulza gave Lennmarker a copy of the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas (Analytical Report and Scenarios Report), published by the OAS in May this year in response to a mandate from the 2012 Summit of the Americas.

Established in 1966 and headquartered in the Swedish capital, SIPRI is an independent international institute dedicated to research on conflicts, armaments, arms control and disarmament. Also present at the meeting was Álvaro Briones, advisor to Secretary General Insulza.
