OAS Secretary General Meets with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Mario Giro, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Insulza and Deputy Minister Giro discussed the political and economic situation in Latin American and the Caribbean, as well as in Europe, and the agenda of the next OAS General Assembly to take place from June 3 to 5 in Asunción, Paraguay, with the theme "Development with Social Inclusion."

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Giro showed interest in the various OAS programs in the Hemisphere, specifically the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP). For his part, Secretary General Insulza highlighted the role of the Permanent Observers to the Organization, who he said, make "a great contribution."

Also present at the meeting were the Permanente Observer of Italy, Ambassador Sebastiano Fulci; the OAS Secretary for External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez; and the OAS Director of the Department of International Affairs, Jorge Sanin.
