The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, took part today in the closing of the First Inter-American Meeting of Presidents of Legislative Powers held in the National Congress of Peru, which concluded with the adoption of a Declaration that expresses commitments and consensus on important issues of the hemispheric agenda, such as getting closer to the citizenry; transparency and accountability in parliamentary management; sustainable economic development; climate change; social inclusion; and the role of women in political representation.

The Declaration reaffirms the will of the participants to form the Inter-American Parliamentary Forum, which will be made up of the Presidents of the national legislatures, representatives of the Parliaments of regional integration and that, with the technical accompaniment of the OAS, aims to act as an integrating and articulating mechanism for the legislative institutions.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Secretary General Insulza and the President of the Congress of Peru, Fredy Otarola. The Chief of Staff of the OAS Secretary General, Hugo de Zela, and the Peruvian congressman Josué Gutiérrez presented the final conclusions and the final Declaration.
