The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today held a meeting with students currently participating in the Internship Program that the hemispheric Organization holds three times a year.

During the meeting, the OAS leader detailed the origins of the Organization which he identified as the "main forum of the Americas," and focused his presentation on the 'pillars' governing the Organization: democracy, human rights, security and sustainable development. In his presentation, Insulza highlighted the important role that young people play in the building of democratic values in the region.

The 86 students from the member states of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the Observer Countries of South Korea, France, Italy and Romania, are carrying out their internships in different departments of the Organization from September to December 2014.
