The President of the Republic of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, today received the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, in the context of the Seventh Summit of the Americas, which brings together the 35 Heads of State and Government of the Hemisphere in the Panamanian capital on April 10 and 11.
During the meeting, President Varela and Secretary General Insulza discussed the latest political developments in the region approaching the Summit, and the theme chosen by Panama for the event, "Prosperity with Equality: the Challenge of Cooperation in the Americas." In particular they agreed on the value of the Civil Society Forum in the context of the Summit, in which they both participated today.
In addition, the two highlighted as an historic success of the event, even before its beginning, the fact that for the first time the 35 independent nations of the Hemisphere have confirmed their attendance at a Summit of the Americas.
President Varela also thanked Secretary General Insulza for his work in favor of development in the region during his ten year tenure at the head of the OAS, which concludes on May 25.
