The Executive Secretary for Integral Development of the Organization of American States (OAS), Sherry Tross, participated today in the opening of a symposium on emerging markets in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution, co-organized by the OAS, the International Economic Alliance, the institution Global Political Solutions (GPS), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and representatives of several developing economies.

Executive Secretary Tross stressed the importance of partnership between the public and private sectors for the growth of the economies of the region. "The range of strategic multilateral, public and private actors represented at the meeting illustrates the partnerships required to move forward the work of the Organization in development, particularly in the areas of small business development, innovation, and competitiveness," she said.

The main topics of the symposium were Global Health and Innovation; Financial Inclusion and Good Governance; Establishing Sovereign Wealth and Investment Funds in Emerging Markets; and Access to Capital, Access to Credit and Access to Alternative Banking in the 21st Century.

In addition to the representatives of the multilateral organizations coordinating the event, participants included diplomatic representatives from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa; several United States companies; and the US-Cameroon and US-Angola Chambers of Commerce, among others.

The symposium takes place in the framework of the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, and the IV Inter-American Dialogue of High-Level Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Authorities.
