The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Organizations of the Senate of Mexico and Senator from the National Action Party, Laura Angelica Rojas, at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

During the meeting, in which the legislator congratulated him on the work done during his leadership of the OAS over the last ten years, they discussed the next steps the hemispheric institution will take to come to agreement on a new regional action plan on drugs for the period 2016-2020, and to bring a common position among member states to the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGASS) on Drugs in 2016.

In this regard, Secretary General Insulza stressed that OAS member countries have already made two important achievements: recognizing that the fight against the world drug problem in the Americas cannot be treated as a criminal matter, and realizing the need for a public health approach in treating drug dependents. He also applauded the work done in recent years by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission, (CICAD), which just concluded its 57th regular session, with important findings to contribute to the national work of member states. During the meeting was also present the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the OAS, Ambassador Emilio Rabasa.
