The XVI Meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Inter-American Convention Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA) took place today at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC with a call on member countries to join efforts on this area critical to citizen security.

The President pro-tempore of the Consultative Committee and Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the OAS, Marco Albuja, highlighted the importance of the CIFTA and called on States parties to “continue working to coordinate decisions that allow for assistance to all the state of the hemisphere with tools to achieve the highest levels of security” in compliance with the principles of the Convention.

The diplomat from Ecuador cited several reports of the United Nations and other international organizations that indicate that Latin America has seen “great advances on social and economic issues,” especially between 2002 and 2013. “Nevertheless, we continue to be the least secure region in the world,” said Ambassador Albuja, who added that the majority of the countries in the region have a homicide rate above ten for every 100,000 inhabitants – which is considered a pandemic by the World Health Organization – and that throughout the Americas the majority of homicides are committed with firearms.
