OAS Secretary General Received the Deputy Minister for Violence and Crime Prevention of Guatemala

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Deputy Minister for Violence and Crime Prevention of Guatemala, Arkel Benítez, with whom he reviewed the initiatives implemented by the Guatemalan government in the fields of security and prevention of violence.

During the meeting, the two discussed the support the OAS has given to the countries of the region in the search for citizen security, and the agenda the Organization has adopted to respond in an effective way to the new demands and challenges in the Hemisphere.

The two also highlighted the achievements of the cooperation between the OAS and Guatemala, with the creation of the Inter-American Network for Violence and Crime Prevention, which was officially presented today to the Permanent Council, and which will bring together regional efforts on combating and preventing these scourges.

The meeting, in which the Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the OAS, José María Argueta, also participated, included discussion of the works of transition being carried out by Guatemala, the cooperation and leadership of the OAS on issues of citizen security and drugs and the importance the regional Organization has taken on over the last decade.
