OAS Secretary General Attends Beatification Ceremony for Oscar Arnulfo Romero

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today attended the beatification ceremony of the former archbishop of El Salvador Oscar Arnulfo Romero in the capital of the Central American country.

Invited by the Salvadoran government, Secretary General Insulza attended the event, held in the Plaza del Divino Salvador del Mundo in San Salvador, and that was led by the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and Special Envoy of the Pope, Cardinal Angelo Amato. The ceremony was also attended by leaders of various countries in the region.

In his homily, Archbishop Amato recalled the virtues of the priest murdered as he offered a Mass in the cathedral of the city on March 24, 1980, and who was well-known for his defense of human rights.

In the framework of the event, Secretary General Insulza met with President of El Salvador, Salvador Sanchez Ceren.
