The new Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Estévez, today presented his credentials to OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, in a ceremony held at the institution’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Secretary General Almagro expressed his appreciation for the institutional strength demonstrated by Guatemala during the recent transition that culminated in the election of a new President. “The country is an example of the democratic system’s strength, and a strength that results in fighting corruption,” he said. Almagro also underscored the "transparency" with which the October 25 presidential elections were carried out, a factor to which the work of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission contributed. He also recalled how the Organization accompanied Guatemala from the beginning in “the process of combating impunity and corruption.”
For his part, Ambassador Estévez recalled that the pillars of the OAS "have always been the cornerstone upon which the existence of the Guatemalan State rests,” and nothing that has occurred in Guatemala “has led us to change our foreign policy.” “The Mission of Guatemala to the OAS will continue to work with the same constructive effort, based on respect and collaboration, as it has always done, having as main objective the defense of the interests of Guatemala and those of the OAS,” concluded the diplomat.
