Uruguay will host the meeting that the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) will hold from July 27-29, which central theme will be "Partnerships with the private sector for port development," according to the agreement signed today by the Uruguayan government and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, stressed the importance of ports for international trade and added that “trade growth in the countries of the Americas will continue to depend largely on the ports, which need more modern infrastructure to be able to handle increasingly larger amounts of goods and services.”

For its part, the Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the OAS, Hugo Cayrús, said the meeting, which will be held in Montevideo, will offer an opportunity to discuss initiatives aimed at developing the port sector and at meeting the goal of having "more sustainable, competitive, and secure ports in the Americas.”
