The new Permanent Representative of Chile to the Organization of American States (OAS), Juan Anibal Barría, presented his credentials to Secretary General Luis Almagro during a ceremony today at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
Ambassador Barría highlighted that the OAS is the "political forum par excellence, the political forum of democracy and for democracy". He also highlighted the work of the Inter-American System, especially the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights as well as OAS contributions "to the development of the framework of international law of the Americas".
Ambassador Barría called for the OAS to be "an organization to serve the people". "This may seem commonplace, but it is essential to today’s more integrated society, which has more rights and requires the OAS to be present among the people and to bear in mind the needs of all our citizens."
For his part, Secretary General Almagro reiterated the Chilean diplomat’s statement. "We are here to serve the rights of the people. The need to be close to citizens, build citizenship, and to express the rights of citizenship, are essential to the work of the Organization," said the OAS Secretary General.”
