OAS and UNESCO Seek to Reduce Educational Inequality

The Organization of American States and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean agreed to created a joint working agenda to strengthen and boost the support of the countries of the region on issues of inequality and its impact on education.

The agenda agreed to seeks to analyze inequality inside the countries of the hemisphere and its impact on the quality of education, as well as increasing the number of students who finish school and improve academic performance. The agreement includes research activities for the creation of an Inter-American Education System (SIE), actions to promote South-South cooperation, exchanges of best practices for educational and institutional strengthening, the generation of content for a virtual platform for the SIE, and monitoring of the education progress of the countries of the region, with a view to achieving the 2030 Education Agenda.

The agenda was agreed to by the Director of the UNESCO Office in Santiago, Jorge Sequeira, and the Director of the Department of Social Inclusion of the OAS, Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian.
