The Special General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) today approved the 2017 Program Budget of the regular fund for the hemispheric institution as well as the Comprehensive Strategic Plan that will guide the work of the Organization in the coming years.

The approved program-budget of the Regular Fund, financed by contributions from member countries through quotas, amounts to 84.9 million dollars, but at the same time, a level of expenditure of no more than $ 73.5 million was set. This expenditure ceiling constitutes a $ 10.8 million (12.84%) decrease from the previous year.

The guidelines of the Comprehensive Strategic Plan of the OAS are based on an analysis of what the member countries have decided will be the Strategic Vision of the Organization, as well as the procedures and objectives of that Vision. The Vision is the result of a multi-year exercise to identify the priority areas in the four pillars in which the works OAS (democracy, human rights, integral development and multidimensional security) as well as the areas of institutional strengthening and administrative management.

The General Assembly, held today at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, Dennis Moses.
