The Organization of American States (OAS) will send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to Honduras for the primary elections on March 12 and for the general elections on November 26, according to the agreement signed today at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

After signing the document, the Permanent Representative of Honduras to the OAS, Leonidas Rosa Bautista, said the presence of the Mission will lend certainty and credibility to the electoral process in his country. He added that “ We support the commitment and institutionality of the OAS to continue moving forward on this issue of observation missions, which I personally believe to be one of the crown jewels that we must always preserve.”

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said the work of the missions strengthen the democratic institutions of the region. He added that “we have the conviction that the work carried out by the Electoral Observation Mission will be for the benefit of democracy in the hemisphere and in particular for the Republic of Honduras, guided at all times to the principles and objectives of observation indicated in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

The Chief of Mission will be the former president of Bolivia, Jorge Quiroga. This will be the eleventh OAS mission in Honduras.
