The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the President of the Government of the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, Patxi López, at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

During the meeting the two officials talked about the current economic and political situation in America and Europe, about governance and other common matters. Secretary General Insulza highlighted the existing coincidences between the regional Organization and the Basque Country in terms of “transparency mechanisms and how to govern in the benefit of everyone, which is, as you know, one of the priorities of the OAS.”

For his part, Lehendakari Lopez said that “we have sought spaces for collaboration in all that has to do with forms of government,” adding that he offered the OAS his experience in the project “Open Government, which is internationally renowned.”

The authorities studied the possibility of increasing opportunities for collaboration to transfer successful experiences from the Basque Country in areas such as vocational training systems, industrial competiveness, and the revitalization of cities.

Also present at the meeting were the Secretary General of External Action of the Basque Country, Guillermo Echenique; the Director of External Relations, Ainhoa Alday; and the OAS Secretaries of External Relations, Alfonso Quiñónez; Political Affairs, Victor Rico; and Multidimensional Security, Adam Blackwell.
