The new Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Rodrigo Vielmann, today presented his credentials to the Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza. During the ceremony, the Guatemalan diplomat reiterated the “unconditional support" of his government for the objectives of the organization, such as "strengthening of democracy, and the advancement and development of the inter-American system."

Secretary General Insulza acknowledged the contribution made by Guatemala as a "founding member of the OAS," which he described as "known and appreciated," expressing his "admiration for the decided way" in which President Otto Perez has begun his term. He expressed his belief that Central America is looking to achieve the "democratic yearning that the peoples have and that the government of Guatemala also shares" to address "the serious economic, social, and security problems that afflict many of our countries".

Present at the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, were the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert Ramdin, the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Honduras, Ambassador Leonidas Rosa Bautista, the Secretary of External Relations of the hemispheric organization, Alfonso Quiñonez, and the Permanent Representatives of Bolivia, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Perú.
