OAS Secretary General Meets with UNAM President

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with José Narro Robles, President of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), who visited Washington to take part in the 48th Lecture of the Americas, whose central theme was “Education and Development in the Americas.”

During the meeting, the two discussed the educational systems in the region and the challenges posed by drug trafficking and consumption to today’s societies. On that point they discussed the mandate delivered to the OAS at the Sixth Summit of the Americas to carry out a study on the different strategies for combating drug addiction and trafficking in the hemisphere.

Also present at the meeting were the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Honduras to the OAS, Leónidas Rosa Bautista; the former Governor of the Mexican state of Michoacán, Lázaro Cárdenas; the Director of the Center for North American Studies of the UNAM, Silvia Núñez; and Jorge Sanin, Director of the Department of International Affairs of the OAS.
