The Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Rita Hernández Bolaños, today assumed the Chair of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) -that rotates every three months- commenting on the priorities on which she will focus her mandate, including democracy, human rights and equality.

"We will promote the necessary agreements to achieve the greatest enjoyment of rights and we will support initiatives that encourage the visibility of vulnerable groups, sustainable development and parity in all its forms," said Ambassador Hernández during the ceremony marking the transfer of the chairmanship that took place today at OAS headquarters in Washington DC.

For his part, the outgoing Chair and Ambassador of Colombia, Andrés Gonzalez, spoke about the responsibility of the OAS to address the challenges of the region. "We must act, prevent, restore, when it comes to democracy, equity, human rights, or when it comes to controlling violence and insecurity. That is the great challenge and we will all have to continue working on that task," said the Colombian diplomat.

The Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Carlos Alberto Calles, will serve as Vice Chair.
