OAS Secretary General Meets with IOM Deputy Director General

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Deputy Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Laura Thompson.

During the meeting, the two discussed the possibility of strengthening the cooperation between the two organizations, given that migration is an issue of great importance for the entire hemisphere. They also highlighted the “very good collaboration” that has developed to this point between the OAS and the IOM.

Secretary General Insulza and Deputy Director General Thompson also talked about the prevention of irregular migration; the human rights of migrants; labor migration; and changes in migratory flows within the hemisphere.

The Coordinator of the OAS Migration Program, Araceli Azuara, and the Regional Representative of the IOM for North America and the Caribbean, Richard Scott, also took part in the meeting in Washington, DC.
