The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, was received this afternoon by the President of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, who was accompanied by his Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Hugo Martínez, and of Justice and Public Security, David Munguía Payés.
Security and the fight against crime were the main topics of conversation between the high authorities. For the Salvadoran government, the fight against gangs is at the center of its efforts to end criminal violence, which costs hundreds of lives every month in the country.
The Catholic Church and Salvadoran civil society have put in place unprecedented mechanisms to bring about some rapprochement between the gangs, which opens possibilities for peace between the criminal groups. In this context, Secretary General Insulza expressed his interest in having the regional organization, through its Secretariat of Multidimensional Security, accompany and study an experience that, if it achieves positive results, could be repeated in other countries of the hemisphere.
