The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today paid his respects to the President of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, Sigfrido Reyes, as part of his official visit to the Central American country.
One of the topics of conversation was the interest of the OAS in getting to know and looking for means to support the governments of its Member States in their fight against insecurity and crime. The two agreed that the State cannot give up its mission to fight, pursue and punish crime.
Secretary General Insulza also expressed his interest in the peace process being undertaken by the gangs in El Salvador and declared his belief that peace must be given a chance. He said if the cease-fire established between the gangs, with the mediation of military bishop Fabio Colindres, results in the saving of hundreds of lives, "it is worth trying this unprecedented proposal to put an end to gang violence."
Deputy Reyes thanked Secretary General Insulza for the gesture of visiting him in the legislative palace as part of his official visit to El Salvador.
