NEXT CONFERENCE IN LECTURE SERIES OF THE AMERICAS TO SPOTLIGHT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ CONTRIBUTION TO INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS SYSTEM

  April 14, 2008

“Indigenous Peoples and their Contribution to the International Human Rights System” takes center stage for the thirty-eighth conference in the Lecture Series of the Americas, on Thursday, April 17, at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C.

James Anaya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples, will keynote Thursday’s Lecture that is being organized by the OAS Secretariat for External Relations.

A human rights law and policy professor at the University of Arizona’s Faculty of Law as well, Anaya teaches and writes about international law, particularly in the areas of human rights, constitutional law and matters related to indigenous peoples. Among his many publications is the highly acclaimed Indigenous Peoples in International Law, first published in 1996.

Professor Anaya has also been a consultant to numerous organizations and government agencies in various countries, on issues related to human rights and indigenous peoples and has represented indigenous groups from various parts of Central and South America in landmark cases before courts and international organizations. He was the lead attorney for the Awas Tingni community in a lawsuit that led to an unprecedented ruling from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the first ruling by an international tribunal to recognize the collective rights of indigenous peoples over their lands and natural resources.

A question-and-answer session follows Anaya’s Lecture, which will be webcast live on the OAS website (www.oas.org).
