OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL TO EXAMINE STATE OF DEMOCRACY IN HAITI

  May 26, 2004

The Organization of American StatesPermanent Council has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday, May 26, at 3:00 p.m., to discuss the situation in Haiti.

The session was requested by member states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which “is of the view that the moment is propitious for the OAS to undertake a collective assessment of the situation of democracy in Haiti”—itself a CARICOM country. CARICOM expressed the view that such an evaluation would serve, among things, to “inform the Organization’s consideration of the renewal of mandate of the OAS Special Mission in Haiti in the new environment in which it finds itself.”
