ERRADICATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN THE FOCUS OF OAS MEETING

  July 16, 2004

Experts from Organization of American States (OAS) member countries will gather at the Organization’s headquarters July 20 and 21 to discuss a proposed follow-up mechanism to the Inter-American Convention to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women.

The recommendations arising from this meeting are expected to be adopted at a Conference of States parties to the 1994 Convention—to be convened by the OAS Secretary General for that purpose—ahead of the Inter-American Commission of Women’s (CIM) October 2004 Assembly of Delegates.

OAS Permanent Council Chair, Nicaragua’s Ambassador Carmen Marina Gutiérrez, will open the meeting that is being coordinated by the CIM. Convened under the auspices of the government of Mexico, the meeting will bring together among others, legal advisors to foreign ministries as well as experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and other international organizations engaged in efforts to eliminate violence against women.
