April 5, 2010
National authorities on social development will meet at Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington, DC., this Tuesday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 7, to begin preparations for the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities on Social Development, to be held in Cali, Colombia, on July 8 and 9, 2010.
The upcoming meeting will be held in the framework of the OAS Inter-American Committee on Social Development (CIDES), an entity charged with the preparation and follow-up to this ministerial forum. During the meeting, the activities and initiatives carried out in response to the mandates of the first ministerial meeting will be reported on, and proposals and new priorities will be presented to respond to the current hemispheric reality in the areas of fighting poverty and social development.
Among the main achievements of this ministerial forum is the launching of the Inter-American Social Protection Network, an initiative supported by heads of state and government during the Fifth Summit of the Americas. The Network is meant to become the principal tool of cooperation in the ministers of social development forum, and is currently supported at the highest political level, a fact that will facilitate its consolidation in 2010.
