OAS Organizes Seminar on the Participation of Indigenous Communities in the Organization

The Organization of American States (OAS) has organized the “Seminar: Mechanisms for the Participation of Indigenous Peoples in the OAS” from June 22 to 24, 2010, the main objective of which is to introduce the necessary elements indigenous representatives need to become more involved in the activities of the hemispheric organization, enrich their knowledge and stimulate dialogue that will strengthen that knowledge.

The meeting, which will take place from 09:00 until 17:30 EDT (13:00 to 21:30 GMT), will begin Tuesday, June 22, with a training workshop organized by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Albert Ramdin, will start the workshop on Wednesday, June 23. The last day of the seminar, June 24, will feature presentations on the subregional perspectives of indigenous communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The meetings will take place in the Hall of the Americas, located in the organization’s main building in Washington, DC.

Throughout the seminar, the Summits of the Americas Secretariat will have a “Virtual Community” available to those interested in contributing to the discussions, with the possibility of participating in forums and discussion groups, and obtaining materials like documents, videos, and links.
