OAS Secretary General Visits El Salvador in Support of National Political Dialogue

  January 7, 2015

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will begin a visit to El Salvador tomorrow, Thursday, to participate in the signing ceremony of the Joint Declaration of Commitment of the Political Parties in the General Assembly of El Salvador to carry out a process of National Political Dialogue, an effort that represents the willingness of the political parties to use dialogue to address the main challenges facing the country.

As custodian of the document, the Secretary General of the OAS will receive copies of the Declaration upon its signing. Since June 2014, at the request of the Salvadoran government, the Organization has supported, through its good offices and political mediation, and in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), those political actors in favor of consolidation of the call to dialogue, within established legal instruments, proposed by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén.

During his visit, the Secretary General will also hold a meeting with Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez, and a series of meetings with senior national authorities and the Secretaries General of the Salvadoran political parties, among others.
