OAS SECRETARY GENERAL PARTICIPATES IN DAVOS WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM

  January 24, 2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, arrived today in Davos, Switzerland, to take part in the annual World Economic Forum, which will bring together leaders from the public and private sector.

The meeting, which continues through Sunday, will provide the opportunity for high-level participants from around the world to study issues related to the global agenda, such as “the shifting power equation,” the situation in the Middle East, major reforms in education, and sustainable development and climate change.

Along with representatives from the political, academic and business world, Insulza will participate in several sessions that will focus not only on global issues but on Latin America, a region that has shown considerable democratic progress but still faces the challenge of extreme poverty.

Insulza will speak on panels examining the challenges of education, immigration policies and the priorities of the hemisphere following an unprecedented electoral period in Latin America and the Caribbean. He will also join the G-20 debate on key issues of the global economic agenda.

Secretary General Insulza will hold several bilateral meetings during the weeklong event, which this year will include 24 heads of government—among them Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva, of Brazil, and Mexico’s Felipe Calderon—and 85 ministers, as well as religious leaders and civil society representatives.

The Davos forum will bring together more than 2,400 participants from 90 countries, half of whom are business leaders. These include Eric Schmidt (Google), Peter Brabeck-Lemathe (Nestle), Michael Dell (Dell), Steve Forbes (Forbes) and Bill Gates (Microsoft).
