OAS Secretary General welcomes commitments of Porfirio Lobo, President-elect of Honduras

  January 22, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said the commitments announced Wednesday in Dominican Republic by Porfirio Lobo, the President-elect of Honduras, are “good news.”

“The commitment that Mr. Lobo assumed freely and personally of creating a government of Unity and National Reconciliation and strengthening other aspects of what was previously the Tegucigalpa-San José Accord, including the Truth Committee and the Verification Committee, are a good path,” Secretary General Insulza said.

Furthermore, he said, with respect to the “sole proposal of the Tegucigalpa-San José Accord that will not be met,” meaning the return of the constitutionally elected President of Honduras, José Manuel Zelaya, Secretary General Insulza praised the fact that “at least, as President Zelaya himself has said, we have a dignified solution to his situation he is willing to accept.”

“I believe this is a good step that naturally must be evaluated by countries. In the case of the OAS, a process of gradual return of Honduras to the democratic community will have to be initiated. We hope it will happen as soon as possible, and we are ready to help in whatever is necessary.”
