OAS SECRETARY GENERAL LAMENTS DEATH OF
ECUADOR’S DEFENSE MINISTER

  January 25, 2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today sent a letter to the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, to express his condolences over last night’s tragic plane accident which took the lives of Ecuadorian Minister of Defense Guadalupe Larriva, her daughter Claudia and other members of that country’s Air Force who were traveling with her.

“Her demise, just days after taking office as the country’s first female Defense Minister, is a sad loss for the Government and the People of Ecuador,” the Secretary General said in the letter. “Speaking for the OAS member states and for myself, I extend my deepest condolences to you and to the family of Dr. Larriva,” Insulza said.
