CLARIFICATIONS REGARDING NEWS ACCOUNTS

  February 24, 2006

As a result of the visit today by Uruguay’s Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Belela Herrera, to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and in response to press accounts of an alleged mediation by the OAS in the dispute between Argentina and Uruguay, the OAS Secretary General would like to clarify the following:

· No OAS body or authority intervenes in any bilateral issue unless it is so requested by both member states.
· In this case, such a request has not been made to the General Secretariat. Both states have only informed the Secretariat in detail about the disagreement that has arisen between them.
Of course, the Secretary General will always make available his good offices in any way that would help to bridge differences between sister nations of the hemispheric community.
