OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Guatemala Begins Deployment to Second Round of Elections

  August 1, 2019

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Guatemala began today its deployment for the second round run-off election on August 11 with a team of specialists in electoral organization and technology.

In the coming days, the Chief of Mission, former President of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solis, will meet with electoral authorities, government representatives, candidates, civil society representatives and other actors, to hear their points of view on the electoral process.

In its report on the June 16 general elections, the Mission delivered a series of recommendations for the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to improve the operation of the system of transmission of preliminary results for the second round. The Mission has monitored the measures taken in this regard and will observe their implementation.

The Mission continues to observe with concern the overly litigious nature of the electoral process, including technical activities that lie strictly within the purview of the TSE.

The OAS Mission will deploy a larger team of observers (85) for this second round of presidential elections. The August 11 vote will be the 20th that the OAS has observed in Guatemala.
