OAS General Secretariat Hails 25th Anniversary of REDTRASEX

  October 4, 2022

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) has saluted the Network of Women Sex Workers of Latin America and the Caribbean (REDTRASEX) on the 25th anniversary of its formation. Launched in Costa Rica in 1997, REDTRASEX currently operates in 14 countries of the region: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Peru.

REDTRASEX plays a crucial role in giving a voice to those who previously had none. The Network's member organizations are made up of women sex workers, who advocate for the human rights and labor rights of those engaging in this work by choice, in an effort to have their labor status recognized by governments and to put an end to them having to go underground, which exposes them to further violence.

The collective organizing of women sex workers has yielded other important outcomes. Over the past 25 years, REDTRASEX has contributed to the fight against HIV/AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases; and to research on the sector’s economic contributions, as well as to studies on the conditions under which sex work is performed. In recent years, the Network has put in place a system of continuous collection of data on violations of their rights in Latin America and the Caribbean – critical for measuring the scope of the problem.

In applauding REDTRASEX for these 25 years of relentless efforts, the OAS General Secretariat reiterates its support for women sex workers as they push for a more inclusive hemispheric agenda that will bring about a more just, more equitable, and safer region.
