OAS Assistant Secretary General Urges Stronger Cooperation on Health Development

  March 9, 2015

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin urged OAS member states to work toward stronger cooperation on health development, during a regional meeting of health authorities organized by the Government of Panama and the Pan American Health Organization in Panama City.

According to the senior OAS official, “South-South and triangular cooperation is needed for sustainable development in all sectors, and the health sector is no exception. Even in times of financial constraints, continued cooperation is crucial to respond more effectively to the basic needs of the citizens of the Americas, and this includes health services.”

During the meeting, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin described the upcoming Seventh Summit of the Americas as an excellent opportunity to revitalize cooperation among member states, as the Summit will focus on the theme “Prosperity with Equity: The Challenge of Cooperation in the Americas.”

“Cooperation among countries is at the core of the OAS; South-South and triangular cooperation occur in all of areas of OAS work,” noted Ambassador Ramdin, who also pointed to other cooperation initiatives of the OAS, including the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and the Mechanism for Follow-Up on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC), and the Inter-American Cooperation Network (CooperaNet), which serves as a mechanism for the enhancement of technical cooperation management among cooperation authorities in the Americas.
