Preliminary Visit of the OAS Mission to the Municipal Elections of Nicaragua Concludes

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) to the November 5 municipal elections in Nicaragua concluded this Friday its preliminary visit to the country. During the three days of work, it held meetings with government and electoral authorities, as well as with representatives of the parties and alliances that will participate in the election, in order to learn about their perspectives regarding the development of the electoral process.

The Chief of Mission, the Vicepresident of the Electoral Court of Uruguay Wilfredo Penco, indicated that ¨this visit has allowed us to learn in more depth aspects regarding the organization of the elections and the main concerns of the political parties. The information gathered will be of great help for the observation of the municipal electoral process.¨ The Chief of the EOM/OAS will soon return to the country to resume the meetings with the actors of the electoral process and members of civil society.

The Mission was installed with the arrival of the observers that comprise the mobile group, who will travel to the 15 departments of the country and the two autonomous regions to learn the details regarding the progress of the organization of the elections at a local level. The remaining members of the Mission will be arriving in the next weeks.

The EOM/OAS thanks the Government of Nicaragua for the invitation to observe the municipal elections, the different actors for their openness and the Nicaraguan people for their warm welcome.
