IN PANAMA, THE OAS WILL HOST A WORKSHOP ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INTER-AMERCAN CONVENTION AGAINST CORRUPTION

  March 13, 2009

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Panama are jointly organizing a workshop on the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption scheduled to be held on March 16 and 17 in Panama City, Panama.

The event will be inaugurated on Monday 16th at 8:30 am by Panama’s President of the National Council for Transparency against Corruption, Rafael Mezquita and by the former Director General of the Spain’s National Institute of Public Administration (INAP), Jaime Rodríguez-Arana Muñoz.

Among the issues to be considered during the workshop are: the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and the treaty’s Follow-up Mechanism (MESICIC), the content and scope of Panama’s two national reports, adopted during the MESICIC review, and a presentation of the Draft Plan of Action for implementing in Panama MESICIC recommendations.

The Draft Action Plan to be reviewed at the workshop identifies specific steps that need to be taken in order to implement recommendations made by the MESICIC Committee of Experts; suggestions in terms of the Government institutions, offices or agencies responsible for implementation; the estimated costs and resources needed; the timetable for execution of the activities; and the milestones set to verify outcomes.

The workshop is being held in response to OAS member states’ requests for assistance in the implementation of the provisions contained in the Convention and, in particular, the recommendations by the MESICIC Committee of Experts.
