OAS and Ministry of Education and Culture, St. Lucia to Host Closing Meeting of Stakeholders for Democratic Citizenship Education Course
April 14, 2010
Thirty-five educators will meet at the Coco-Palm Resort in Rodney Bay St. Lucia on April 15 and 16 for a closing meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) project entitled ‘Education for Democratic Citizenship in the Caribbean: A Distance Course for Educators’ (EDCC course).
The EDCC course is a three-year pilot project that seeks to: strengthen the capacity of classroom teachers in the English-speaking Caribbean to teach democratic values and practices in their classrooms; and inform the development of regional and national policy in the area of citizenship education.
The meeting will be attended by representatives of The UWI Open Campus (UWIOC) and of the Ministries of Education of participating countries, as well as by a sub-group of the project Advisory Committee, teacher-participants of the EDCC course, and representatives of the OAS Office of Education and Culture.
The meeting will discuss the design and implementation of the project and lessons learned; highlights of the project monitoring and evaluation; and will explore current and prospective initiatives aimed at sustaining project efforts.
The EDCC course was developed based on a Memorandum of Understanding between the OAS and UWIOC. The project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and by contributions from the UWIOC and participating member-states, including Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. The course content is informed by the principles embodied in the Inter-American Democratic Charter to which Caribbean member states are signatories.
