LUIGI EINAUDI HAILED FOR HIS “IMPECCABLE DIPLOMACY”

  July 8, 2005

Italy’s Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Geri Schiavoni, today paid tribute to OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi R. Einaudi for his “impeccable diplomacy and steadfast commitment.”

During a luncheon held in Einaudi’s honor at the Italian Embassy in Washington, Schiavoni called the outgoing Assistant Secretary General “a quintessential man of the Americas.” The Italian diplomat recognized Ambassador Einaudi’s leadership throughout his five-year term and during the months he spent as Acting Secretary General, before José Miguel Insulza took office in May.

Ambassador Schiavoni also talked about the U.S.-born Einaudi’s strong ties to Italy, noting that he is the grandson and namesake of the first President of the Republic, Luigi Einaudi.

Italy was among the first countries outside the Western Hemisphere to become an OAS permanent observer, in 1972. Schiavoni said his country is interested in expanding collaboration with the Organization, which he said “has an important and established role in the democratic stability, defense of human rights, security and socioeconomic development of the hemisphere.”

In brief remarks, Ambassador Einaudi stressed that Italy and the countries of the Americas are bound by strong ties of democracy and freedom. “That solidarity is the most fundamental solidarity there is in the world,” he said. “It is one that has made it very easy for me to be a very proud American and at the same time to recognize my Italian origins. And it has made it very easy for me to work in the OAS, since that is what the OAS now stands for.”

Among the diplomats who attended the luncheon were the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Roger Noriega; Italy’s Ambassador to the United States, Sergio Vento; the OAS Assistant Secretary General-elect, Albert R. Ramdin, who takes office July 19; the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, Ambassador Roberto Alvarez of the Dominican Republic; and the U.S. Ambassador to the OAS, John Maisto.
